When I was just starting out as a blogger and as a freelancer, social media wasn’t such a big thing—and, I know, I know, I’m really dating myself here—but, I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I know the blogosphere like the back of my hand. Because of that, I know exactly how hard it can be to get in the game today.
Social media gives a lot of people the chance to put their message out to a lot of people, and that’s great! The problem is, social media isn’t a perfect system, and its limitations can hurt your message. Of course, blogging isn’t perfect either, but having control over your content is important for the budding freelancer.
If you’re not sure whether starting a blog is right for you, check out the following ways and reasons you can jump into blogging today. Even if you’re not much of a writer, take a look at what you can do to get started today.
Social Media is Ever-Changing
Remember MySpace? I rest my case.
Social media is a wonderful tool for spreading the word about what you’re doing, but putting everything on social media without a backup plan may be dangerous. Now that Facebook and Twitter have become the massive platforms they are today, it seems like there’s a little more staying power—but that doesn’t mean we’ll all still be tweeting ten years from now.
Worse, the rules change pretty regularly. While your content may seem safe now, a mistake, whether on their end or yours, could lead to your account being removed. All that content? Gone, since these sites can do what they want with it. With a blog, you have a chance to take control of your platform.
Blogging Is Flexible
Love short, meaningful posts but hate the way Facebook looks? Your blog is endlessly customizable. Your blog should be a reflection of your work, whether you write about how a serious auto accident can change your life, or whether your site focuses on the day-to-day routines of your toddler.
Fortunately, blogs give you the freedom to do exactly that. In fact, I’ve run several blogs at a time in the past—a personal blog for personal thoughts, a movie review blog, and a professional blog for my portfolio, to name a few. Each one serves a different purpose, helping me cover all my interests.
Interested in Blogging? Stay Tuned!
Personally, I think building a blog is the best thing a freelancer or content creator can do. Even if you draw and you’re not so confident in your writing skills, your blog can be a great platform for displaying all the things you’ve made to a wider audience. You can even make it easier for your audience to reach out to you through newsletters, subscriptions, and—of course—social media.
Now, the question is… How do you do it? I’ll be covering my own blogging journey and how I learned to make my blog work best for me. That way, you can get started on building your own audience and getting more clients as a freelancer.
